PJ Hagerty has a pretty good claim to having coined the term “developer relations.” According to Wikipedia, he and Eamon Leonard landed on it around 2011. Since then, PJ’s built DevRel programs at IBM, Spotify, and a string of startups, and he currently leads DevRelate.io.
But this episode isn’t really a DevRel history lesson. PJ used to play guitar outside bars he wasn’t old enough to get into, and that same punk-rock stubbornness — “you cannot tell me what to do” — is how he thinks about open source’s relationship with AI right now: use it as a tool, don’t let it run the show. He also talks candidly about being laid off from Spotify in an AI-driven cut, why the industry is losing its human face, and the decade-plus he’s spent pushing tech to talk openly about mental health through Open Sourcing Mental Health.
It’s a conversation about what gets lost when we let machines do the relating. Listen to the full episode and don’t forget to subscribe so you get the next one.
